BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT
Dr Ben Saunders’ is a marine ecologist with a research focus on marine fishes. His research focusses on understanding where fish live and why, and human influences on this, including climate mediated changes, man-made structures, infrastructure and artificial reefs. Ben has a particular interest in temperate systems, and areas of overlap between warm temperate and sub-tropical regions. His current research focus is on shifting reef fish assemblages in Australia’s south-west. His active and recent areas of research include spatial distribution and habitat associations of fishes, behavioural ecology, community ecology, the influence of anthropogenic structures, and environmental changes on fishes.
Dr Saunders is also interested in developing technologies to survey fish in challenging environments. His expertise and experience covers visual techniques including diver operated and baited remote stereo-video, stereo-video on remotely operated vehicles, and extends into acoustic techniques (imaging sonar) and environmental DNA.
