BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT

Matthew Lyons is a Research Fellow at the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre (BCEC), which he joined in 2026. He holds a PhD in Economics and an MSc in Social Science Research Methods from Cardiff University, as well as a First Class BSc (Hons) in Economics from the University of Plymouth. His research focuses on applied regional and spatial economics, with particular expertise in multi‑regional input–output modelling, policy evaluation, and the analysis of structural change across regions and industries.

Before joining BCEC, Matt was a Research Fellow at the City Region Economic Development Institute (City‑REDI) at the University of Birmingham. There, he led the development and application of advanced regional economic models, including the Socioeconomic Impact Model for the UK (SEIM‑UK). The SEIM has been used to assess issues such as trade shocks, the economic contribution of the creative industries, net zero transitions, skills shortages, and regional inequality. His work has been referenced by policymakers at both the regional and national levels and widely cited in media outlets including The Independent, The Observer, BBC News, and ITV News.

Matt is the Secretary of the Regional Science Association – British and Irish Section and a member of the International Input–Output Association (IIOA). He has previously held research roles at the Fraser of Allander Institute and the University of Maine, and has undertaken commissioned analytical work for government, industry, and third‑sector organisations.
