BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT

Dr Yu-Cheng Huang is an experimental physicist and materials researcher specialising in electronic structure, interfacial phenomena, electrocatalysis, and in situ/operando synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy.

He is currently a Research Associate at the Curtin Centre for Advanced Energy Materials and Technologies (CAEMT), Curtin University. His research focuses on the development of durable and cost-effective materials, catalysts, and electrode systems for water electrolysis and green hydrogen production, with particular emphasis on proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE).

His work integrates advanced electrochemical testing with synchrotron-based soft and hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate reaction mechanisms, catalyst reconstruction, degradation pathways, and structure–performance relationships under realistic operating conditions. A major focus of his current research is understanding and improving the stability of RuO₂-based electrocatalysts for acidic oxygen evolution, with the aim of reducing reliance on scarce iridium-based materials.

Dr Huang also has extensive experience in synchrotron beamline operation, in situ/operando cell development, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and advanced materials characterisation. His broader research interests include condensed matter and materials physics, electrochemistry, functional energy materials, interfacial science, and synchrotron instrumentation.
