BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT
I am an environmental geochemist with expertise in deciphering the biogeochemistry of Earth’s surface systems. My research program feeds the themes of surface process mapping, contaminant mobility and trapping, and mine waste reuse and remediation. Broadly, this aims to tease apart biogeochemical signatures in surface systems to (1) better understand how Earth functions and how it has been altered by anthropogenic activity, (2) assess sustainability of modified landscapes and mobility of contaminants, (3) assist in the restoration of mines, contaminated sites and other modified landscapes, (4) support the reuse of critical elements and materials, and (5) address climate change.
I am passionate about environmental rehabilitation and am dedicated to development of better practices around land use, mining, and restoration, to drive tangible environmental improvements and protections for future generations. I have extensive experience in environmental research, teaching, government and consulting roles in both Western Australia and the Eastern States.
Research interests and expertise include:
• Earth surface geochemistry
• Chemical sedimentology
• Mobility, bioavailability and accumulation of contaminants and critical elements in landscapes
• Coastal and marine processes
• Fe, S, C biogeochemical cycles (natural and altered)
• Acid mine and acid sulfate soil drainage
• Eutrophication
• Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS)
• Mine tailings use in carbon capture and critical element liberation
• Contaminant immobilisation in minerals
• Blue carbon and early diagenesis
• Ocean acidification
• Natural weathering and soil/sediment forming processes
• Interpretation of chemical datasets for environmental samples
• Collection, storage, and analysis of environmental samples (soils, sediments, porewaters, surface water, groundwater).
• Wet-chemical analysis, crystal chemistry, X-ray diffraction and absorption, synchrotron techniques
• Mineral stability and transformation
• Vapour-solid reactions at the mineral-surface interface
• Rare earth elements as tracers of environmental processes and anthropogenic influence.
