BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT

Associate Professor Lien Duong is at School of Accounting, Economics and Finance (Curtin University) and also serves as the Theme Lead - Carbon Markets at the Curtin Institute for Energy Transition. Her research focuses on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), carbon accounting, sustainability, and capital markets. Her work has been published in international journals such as Journal of Business Finance and Accounting; Business Strategy and the Environment; Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, and Economic Modelling. Lien's research findings have been widely disseminated through numerous media outlets such as The Guardian, Australian Financial Review, The Conversation, The New Daily, National Nine News (TV), and ABC News (TV).

Associate Professor Duong is the recipient of several esteemed awards from Curtin University, including the 2025 and 2023 Global Award for Industry Engagement (two-time winner), 2025 and 2022 Faculty Internationalisation Award (two-time winner), 2022 Faculty Research Engagement Award, and 2013 Research Performance Index Award (Early Career Researcher category). In February 2025, she was featured in a podcast by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, highlighting bilateral cooperation on climate, environment and energy, Pillar 4 of the two countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). In April 2026, she was awarded the Certificate of Merit from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, recognising her outstanding contributions to Vietnam and to strengthening the Australia-Vietnam CSP through her 10 DFAT-funded projects and community leadership roles (awarded to four recipients globally and she is the only awardee in Australia for the year's round).

Lien’s industry technical report on the hidden costs of buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) products was cited in The Treasury Options Paper, alongside the report of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, in November 2022. It played a key role in the Australian Government's decision in May 2023 to regulate the BNPL industry, protecting vulnerable consumers, particularly women, First Nations communities, and low-income individuals.

Associate Professor Duong has secured multi-million-dollar competitive funding from Australian government on greenhouse gas reporting, carbon markets, energy transition, net-zero data and ESG. Her work has contributed to shaping government policies in Australia and Vietnam, particularly in climate-related reporting and carbon market development. She has played leading roles in successfully implementing specialised capacity-building programs for businesses and government agencies in both countries. They included a high-level capacity-building initiative tailored for Vietnam’s 200 future strategic leaders, targeting Deputy Ministers and Provincial Chairpersons, who were potential candidates for the 14th Party National Congress (2026–2031).
