BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT
I’m a researcher, participatory visual artist and youth specialist interested in how people see, make, share and live with images, and how those processes shape what we know about ourselves, each other and the world. My work sits across public health, internet studies, visual culture, human rights and socially engaged practice. I’m interested in visibility, representation, belonging, memory and power: who gets seen, who gets to make images, who decides what happens to them, and whose ways of seeing and knowing are taken seriously.
Collaboration is central to how I work, particularly with children and young people. I’m suspicious of the assumption that adults automatically know best. Children are smaller humans with their own ideas, interpretations and ways of understanding the world, and I’m interested in what becomes possible when they are treated as collaborators, image-makers and knowledge-makers.
My research is grounded in practice and only exists with and because of other people. I’m committed to human stories, and to the idea that knowledge comes from everywhere. The knowledge I hold dearest is often beyond what I can articulate in words, let alone fully capture through evidence.Because of this, I’m humbled by the fact that academia is not the beginning and end of what is true, relevant and beautiful. I engage with it because I consider that part of my responsibility, in exchange for the privilege of experiences that have allowed me to witness so much human strength and kindness that I remain an optimist.
