Biography

Dr Chayan Mondal is an Associate Lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Curtin University, with more than 10 years of teaching and research experience in electrical and electronic engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning. His research focuses on the development and application of AI to complex real-world problems, with a primary focus on healthcare and medical imaging and growing cross-disciplinary applications across engineering and other domains.

His research interests include explainable and trustworthy AI, generative AI, large language models, computer vision, multimodal learning, intelligent anomaly detection and AI-enabled decision support. His work aims to develop AI systems that are accurate, interpretable, reliable and capable of addressing practical challenges in real-world environments.

Dr Mondal completed his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Curtin University as an Optus-Curtin PhD Scholar. His doctoral research focused on explainable generative AI for automated chest X-ray interpretation and radiology report generation, leading to the development of AURA-CXR, an AI platform for explainable chest X-ray analysis and automated clinical report generation. AURA-CXR received the 2025 Curtinnovation Award in the Learning and Teaching category and was also a finalist in the 2025 INCITE Awards, recognising its innovation and potential for real-world impact.

Building on his work in healthcare AI, Dr Mondal is expanding the application of AI across disciplinary boundaries, including electrical power and energy systems, cybersecurity and other engineering applications. His current research explores how modern AI techniques can be adapted to domain-specific challenges such as intelligent monitoring, anomaly detection, fault diagnosis, cyber-physical system security and decision support. He is particularly interested in combining AI expertise with domain knowledge to develop solutions that are technically robust, interpretable and practically meaningful.

Dr Mondal has established international research collaborations with researchers and institutions across Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as collaborations with clinical and industry stakeholders. His work with Fiona Stanley Hospital supports the translation and evaluation of AI technologies in real-world clinical environments.

Before commencing his PhD at Curtin University, Dr Mondal was an Assistant Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Gopalganj Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU), Bangladesh. He completed his BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), and has supervised research in biomedical signal processing, assistive technologies, medical image analysis and machine learning.

Dr Mondal's research is driven by a broader goal of bringing AI expertise into different domains to solve meaningful real-world problems, fostering cross-disciplinary and international collaboration and translating research into practical technologies with societal and industry impact.

Grants, Awards & Recognition:

Developed AURA-CXR, which uses generative AI to analyse chest X-rays and generate explainable reports within seconds. Adaptable for expert or trainee use, it boosts speed and consistency while easing the radiologist's workload.

Developed an AI-powered radiology tool delivering explainable, tailored diagnostic reports to ease radiologists' workloads, enhance accuracy, and improve patient outcomes, particularly in remote areas.

  • Finalist, Curtin Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, 2024

Presented “AI-based Automatic CXR Report Generation”, summarizing PhD research in three minutes.

  • Runner-Up Presentation Award, IEEE WA HDR Elevator Pitch, IEEE WA Chapter, 2023 & 2024

Recognised in consecutive two years for effectively pitching PhD research to a multidisciplinary audience.

  • Technical Editor and Data Analyst, Murujuga Rock Art Project, 2024

Appointed to serve as Technical Editor and Data Analyst for the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation Rock Art Project, a nationally recognised initiative supported by Western Australia to protect Aboriginal rock art.

  • Optus-Curtin Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence PhD Scholarship, 2021

Awarded a full stipend and tuition fee offset (4 years equivalent) grant to conduct PhD research on AI-driven data-driven techniques for advancing medical imaging and healthcare applications.
