BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT
Dr Mohammadali (Ali) Sepehri is a Lecturer in Mining Engineering at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM), Curtin University. He holds a PhD and MSc in Mining Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada, where he also completed postdoctoral research in mining geomechanics.
His teaching and research interests span mine geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, numerical modelling, open-pit and underground mine stability, and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to geomechanics. His work particularly focuses on applying advanced numerical and data-driven methods to practical mining engineering problems, including slope stability, underground excavation stability, caving and stoping systems, seismic and rockburst-related behaviour, tailings storage facilities, and sustainable mine design.
Dr Sepehri teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in mine geotechnical engineering, numerical modelling, and slope stability, with a strong emphasis on industry-relevant problem solving, engineering judgement, active learning, and the practical application of computational tools.
He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA in Canada and holds the AusIMM Professional Certificate in Tailings Management. He is actively involved in postgraduate research supervision, industry-engaged research, and the development of innovative approaches to mining engineering education.
His broader research objective is to integrate advanced numerical modelling, emerging digital technologies, and data-driven methods to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of mining operations.
