BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT
I am a clinical research audiologist, with 18 years of clinical and 9 years of research experience in adult audiological rehabilitation.
My research experience includes planning, management and delivery of research projects, including sourcing funding (successful grants totaling over $400,000). I have experience with quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods techniques. I have used co-design and behaviour change approaches for intervention development and pilot testing within the clinical setting.
I have an extensive and growing network of national and international collaborators, including 58 researchers from 10 countries (Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, USA, Switzerland, South Africa, Netherlands, UK, and Ireland), and from over 40 institutions. Many of these are thought-leaders in their field. I am an active interdisciplinary collaborator with research partners in audiology, speech pathology, psychology, gerontology, General Practice, ENT, epidemiology, and behavioural sciences.
My research interests span (i) hearing device acquisition, use and management; (ii) audiology service delivery; (iii) the social and emotional impacts of hearing loss, and how these are addressed in the audiology setting; (iv) building a multidiciplinary team to support persons with hearing loss; and (v) aged care.
I currently head four research projects that aim to transform hearing rehabilitation services so that the social and emotional impacts of hearing loss are more adequately addressed. One of these projects, supported by a Raine Medical Research Foundation (Cockell) Fellowship, has developed an intervention program to equip and empower audiologists to better provide mental health support to adults with hearing loss within the audiology setting.
I am a Board Director (2016-current) of Audiology Australia (national peak body for audiologists), which has afforded me the opportunity to develop strong relationships with experts and influential leaders in the audiology community. I am also the Chair of the Audiology Australia University Accreditation and Competencies Committee (2017-current). We oversee the university course accreditation processes, and develop competency standards and guidelines for the audiology profession. I thus meet regularly with the heads of faculty of the six Australian universities that offer audiology programs. I lead development of the 2021/22 tele-audiology guidelines project (https://teleaudiologyguidelines.org.au/about-the-guidelines-project/).
I have extensive teaching and mentoring experience, including development and delivery of educational content for professional development courses (GP, nursing, ENT and audiology) and university students (medical and audiology). I currently supervise three PhD students, and three Masters students across various universities (University of Western Australia, University of Melbourne, and University of Pretoria). I have previously supervised fifteen Masters students and more than ten clinical intern audiology students to completion.
