BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT
Anum Ejaz is a PhD researcher at Curtin University whose work focuses on disability, accessibility, and digital inclusion in contemporary visual media and technology environments. Her research explores how people with vision impairment and blindness experience, navigate, and make meaning of increasingly visual and algorithmically mediated digital platforms.
Drawing on phenomenology, hermeneutics, and Disability Studies, Anum examines the lived experience of digital exclusion and the socio-cultural and technological factors that shape participation, belonging, and inclusion in online visual spaces. Her work is particularly concerned with visual social media, accessible artificial intelligence, screen reader use, algorithms, and the impact of digital design decisions on social and cultural participation.
A key focus of her scholarship is the development of inherently accessible and participant-led research methodologies that centre the knowledge and lived experiences of people with disabilities. Grounded in the philosophical traditions of Heideggerian and Gadamerian phenomenology, her research employs qualitative approaches, including photo elicitation and digital artefacts, to investigate how people with vision impairment and blindness engage with visual digital environments. Through this work, she seeks to expand how digital accessibility research is conducted, understood, and applied.
Beyond visual social media, Anum's interests extend to accessible digital publishing, digital book production, audio media, radio, podcasting, and non-visual forms of digital communication. Her interdisciplinary research aims to contribute to more inclusive technologies, accessible knowledge production, and equitable participation in media, culture, and society.
