BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT
Professor Guohua Jia is a Professor and ARC Future Fellow in the School of Molecular and Life Sciences at Curtin University. He is an internationally recognised researcher in materials chemistry and nanotechnology, with expertise in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, quantum dots, nanocrystal self-assembly, optical spectroscopy, energy conversion and storage, and light-emitting technologies.
Professor Jia received his PhD in Chemistry from City University of Hong Kong and subsequently undertook postdoctoral research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He joined Curtin University as a Curtin Research Fellow in 2015 and established an independent research program in nanomaterials and materials chemistry. His research excellence has been recognised through major competitive fellowships and awards, including an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA), an ARC Future Fellowship, the RACI Materials Chemistry Award, and the J G Russell Award from the Australian Academy of Science. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (FRACI) in 2023 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in 2026. He has also served as a member of the ARC College of Experts since 2024.
Professor Jia leads a multidisciplinary research program focused on understanding, designing and engineering functional nanomaterials at the molecular and nanoscale levels. His research explores fundamental relationships between the size, shape, composition, structure and properties of semiconductor nanocrystals, while translating these insights into applications in light-emitting devices, solar energy conversion, hydrogen production, catalysis and energy storage. His current research also encompasses high-entropy nanomaterials for sustainable energy production.
He has published more than 190 peer-reviewed journal articles. His research has appeared in leading international journals including Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Photonics, Chemical Reviews, Chemical Society Reviews, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Materials and Energy & Environmental Science. His research is highly collaborative, with extensive partnerships across Australia and internationally, as well as engagement with industry.
Professor Jia is strongly committed to research training and mentorship. He has mentored approximately 40 early-career researchers and students and has served as principal supervisor for 12 PhD students, with seven completions. His graduates have received prestigious awards and fellowships and progressed to successful careers in academia, industry and entrepreneurship.
Beyond his research and teaching commitments, Professor Jia has made substantial contributions to scientific leadership and professional service. He founded and chaired the inaugural Australian Materials Chemistry Conference (AMCC23) and has served as Chair of the RACI Materials Chemistry Division from 2024 to 2026. Since 2024, he has also initiated and chaired a number of international symposia at American Chemical Society (ACS) meetings, fostering scientific exchange and collaboration across the international materials chemistry community.
Professor Jia also contributes actively to scholarly publishing. He serves in editorial roles for several international journals, including Materials & Design, Materials Today Chemistry, and the Australian Journal of Chemistry, and is an advisory board member for leading journals such as Nanoscale and Nanoscale Horizons. Through his research, mentorship, academic service, and professional leadership, Professor Jia is committed to advancing innovative and sustainable nanomaterial technologies that address major global challenges in energy and the environment.
