BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT
Dr Claire Munsie is a researcher and clinician in exercise oncology at Curtin University, with expertise in exercise physiology, cancer supportive care, and adolescent and young adult (AYA) oncology.
Claire's research aims to improve physical activity and quality of life for people undergoing cancer treatment, with a particular focus on adolescents and young adults. Her work examines how exercise can be embedded within routine cancer care to reduce treatment-related fatigue, preserve physical function, and support treatment completion. She is committed to closing the gap between exercise oncology evidence and standard clinical practice, and to building supportive care models that reach patients who currently miss out, including those in regional and remote areas.
A major focus of her research is the design and evaluation of exercise interventions during active cancer treatment, including randomised controlled trials and hybrid effectiveness-implementation studies. Her PhD produced the first registered RCT examining supervised exercise during active treatment in an AYA cohort. She has expertise in exercise intervention design and behaviour change strategies.
Her research spans clinical and community-based exercise oncology, with particular interests in treatment-specific exercise medicine, AYA cancer survivorship, and underserved populations. Her broader work includes workforce development in exercise oncology, alongside a research affiliation with the Mental Health and Exercise (MHEX) research group at the University of Western Australia, with particular interest in youth mental health and trans and gender-diverse young people. She contributes to wider discussions on equity and access in supportive cancer care.
Claire is an experienced clinician and educator. She has more than a decade of clinical experience as a Senior Exercise Physiologist at the WA Youth Cancer Service, and lectures in Clinical Exercise Physiology at Curtin University. She has supervised over 60 clinical Masters-level students and contributes to postgraduate research training through the Mental Health and Exercise (MHEX) research group at the University of Western Australia. Claire is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).
