BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IMPACT

Deborah Kerr is a Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics in the School of Public Health at Curtin University. She is currently the Discipline Lead for Nutrition and Dietetics. Deborah is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) with qualifications in nutrition and dietetics. In her career at Curtin University, Deborah’s academic responsibilities have included course coordination for the Master of Dietetics, teaching and administration. In July, 2014 she took up a full-time research appointment. Deborah leads highly innovative interdisciplinary nutrition and physical activity randomised controlled trials. Her most significant contribution is to the field of mobile methods of dietary assessment and applying these methods in complex interventions to change dietary behaviour. Her research uses cutting edge digital technologies to assess diet and improve dietary behaviours. This has led to two patents, held with international collaborators on more robust low burden image-based mobile methods. Recent behavioural interventions have involved digital technologies such as text messaging and image-based dietary assessment. Deborah has highly developed skills and experience in applying dietary assessment methods such as food records and food frequency questionnaires and has developed protocols, trained and mentored undergraduate and postgraduate students and dietitians in dietary assessment methodology. Deborah is recognised internationally as an expert in body composition and anthropometry and the only Level 4 (highest level) accredited anthropometrist in Australia (1 of 16 world-wide).
